Who uses kraft gift boxes with lids?

Jewellery makers, scarf and textile brands, candle studios, gift shops and anyone selling a set of small items together. They are also popular for wedding favours, birthday gifts and Mother's Day hampers.

Our photos show the range: small jewellery boxes with a soft pad in the base, a medium box with a printed lid over a folded scarf, a polka dot box tied with ribbon and a large box with an embossed floral lid.

The two-piece shape feels more special than a folding carton. Lifting a lid straight off is a small moment, and it is why many people keep these boxes long after the gift is used.

These sit in our kraft retail and gift boxes range.

Should the lid cover the whole base?

A lid can be shallow, covering only the top part of the base, or full depth, covering it to the table. Each changes how the box looks and opens.

Lid styleWhat it looks likeGood for
Shallow lidLid covers the top 15 to 25 mm; base shows belowJewellery and small gifts, easy to lift
Half-depth lidLid covers about half the baseGift sets and candles
Full-depth lidLid reaches the table; base is hiddenPremium gifts and keepsake boxes

A deeper lid uses more board, so it changes the price a little. Your quote shows the lid depth you asked for, and we can price two depths side by side if you are deciding.

What size gift box with a lid do I need?

Measure the gift with any card or pad that goes under it. The base is cut to these inside sizes, and the lid is made a little larger to slide over.

Common starting sizes are about 90 × 90 × 30 mm for jewellery, 150 × 150 × 60 mm for a small gift, 250 × 200 × 80 mm for a medium set and 350 × 280 × 100 mm for a large gift or a folded throw. They are guidance only.

See our guide on how to measure inside sizes before you send numbers.

Which board makes a good kraft gift box?

Most gift boxes with lids are made in brown kraft folding board. It gives crisp corners and a smooth surface for print, foil and embossing.

Larger gift sets can use brown kraft corrugated, which keeps a wide lid flat and stiff. Ask for white-lined kraft if you would like the inside of the box to be white.

Our guide to kraft board types explained compares each option.

How can I decorate the lid?

The lid is the face of the gift, so most of the decoration goes there. Kraft suits finishes that show texture as well as ink.

  • Embossing: a raised pattern pressed into the board, like the floral lid in our photos
  • Debossing: a pressed-in logo that catches light
  • Foil on kraft: a metallic name or mark
  • White ink: polka dots or a light pattern across the lid
  • Full colour print: an illustration across the top

Embossing and foil look best on simple shapes and a logo of a decent size, which we check on the proof.

Can I add an insert or a pad inside?

You can add a card or corrugated insert. A slotted card can hold a ring, a bracelet card or a set of small jars in place.

If you use a soft pad or crinkle paper of your own, tell us its thickness so we can add it to the inside height.

Inserts also make a set look complete. Three small jars in cut-outs read as a planned gift, while the same jars loose in tissue look like an order.

For gifts posted in several parts, our kraft mailer boxes with inserts may suit better.

Is a gift box with a lid better than a mailer?

They do different jobs. A gift box with a lid is made to be handed over in person, and it looks best on a table. A mailer is made to travel through the post on its own.

If you sell gifts online, many sellers use both: the lidded gift box holds the item, and a plain mailer carries it to the customer. The gift box arrives clean and ready to give.

Do gift boxes with lids suit seasonal gifts?

Yes. Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Eid, birthdays and weddings are all busy times for lidded kraft boxes. A plain box with a printed band or sticker can change with each occasion, so one stock of boxes covers the year.

If you want a design for one occasion only, print a small run with that artwork and keep a plain run for everything else.

How do I put a gift box together?

  1. Fold up the four walls of the base and lock the corners, or open the pre-formed base.
  2. Do the same with the lid.
  3. Lay your pad, tissue or insert in the base.
  4. Place the gift and close the tissue over it.
  5. Lower the lid straight down so the corners line up.
  6. Tie a ribbon or add a sticker to hold the lid for handover.

What goes wrong with lids on gift boxes?

We size the lid against the base on the same dieline, so the fit is right on the first run.

  • A lid sized too tight, so it sticks and tears the base corners
  • A lid sized too loose, so it slides off when the box is tilted
  • A deep lid on a very low box, which leaves nothing to grip
  • Forgetting to allow for a pad or tissue in the base height

Your question is not here?Ask on WhatsApp+44 7578 382054
Do kraft gift boxes with lids come flat?

Most do. The base and the lid each fold up from flat with locking corners, which saves space until you need them.

How much bigger is the lid than the base?

Just enough to slide over the base walls without catching. We set the gap on the dieline so you only send the inside size of the base.

Can I emboss a logo on a kraft gift box lid?

Yes. Embossing presses the design up from the board and suits kraft well because the texture shows. Keep the logo simple and not too small.

Can a kraft gift box hold a pair of earrings on a card?

Yes. A small box about 90 × 90 × 30 mm with a card insert is a common choice. Send the card size and we cut the slot to fit.

Can I print polka dots on a kraft gift box?

Yes. White ink dots on brown board give the look in our photos. Any simple repeat pattern works across the lid and sides.

Do you add ribbon to kraft gift boxes?

We make the boxes and do not supply ribbon. Many customers tie their own ribbon around the lid for a gift finish.

Can the base of a gift box be printed too?

Yes. The base sides can carry print or stay plain. A plain base with a printed lid is the most common and keeps cost down.

Can a kraft gift box with a lid be posted?

Place it inside a mailer or shipping box for posting. A lift-off lid is not designed to stay on through the post on its own.

Can I order a gift box with a lid for a folded scarf?

Yes. Fold the scarf as you sell it and measure the folded stack. A box around 250 × 200 × 80 mm is a common start.

Can I have foil and embossing on the same lid?

Yes, both are available as options and can be combined. We show where each sits on your proof.

Is a full-depth lid harder to open?

A full-depth lid can sit snug. Thumb notches cut into the base sides help the customer lift it off.

Can I use kraft gift boxes for wedding favours?

Yes. Small lidded boxes suit favours well, and a one-colour name and date on the lid is a simple finish.
