Who uses round kraft boxes?

Round boxes suit products that are round already. A candle jar, a tin of balm or a bath bomb looks right in a cylinder, and sits in it without gaps at the corners.

Our round orders mostly come from candle studios, makers of solid skincare and balms, bath salt and wax melt sellers, milliners, and gift shops that want a box people keep on a dressing table. Around Valentine's Day the heart shape takes over.

A round box also feels different in the hand. It has no flaps or tucks, and the lid comes away with a soft pull that customers tend to notice.

People keep them, too. A round kraft box from a candle often ends up holding hair ties, buttons or earrings, so your logo stays on show long after the candle has burned down.

How does a round box close?

There are two common ways, and the photos on this page show both.

A push-on lid is the simplest and easiest to open. The neck style gives a smooth line from top to bottom with no step, and the friction of the ring keeps the lid on when the box is picked up by its top.

What size round box fits a candle?

Measure the widest point of the product, which on a candle is often the lip of the jar or the lid. Then measure the height including any lid, wick or label that stands proud. Add a couple of millimetres to the diameter so the product drops in easily.

These typical inside sizes, diameter by diameter by height in millimetres, are a guide:

• Small, about 60 × 60 × 40: lip balm, solid perfume or wax melts
• Medium, about 90 × 90 × 70: a single candle or a pot of bath salts
• Large, about 140 × 140 × 100: a gift set or a large three-wick candle
• Hat box, about 250 × 250 × 180: hats, scarves and bigger gifts

If the product is square or oval, a round box will leave gaps that let it rattle. Our kraft candle boxes cut to the jar may suit a square vessel better.

What board are round kraft boxes made from?

Round boxes are built from kraft tube board, rolled into a cylinder and closed with a base disc. We quote the board for each order because the right thickness depends on the diameter and what goes inside.

Unlike most boxes on this site, round boxes cannot be delivered flat. They arrive made up, with lids on, packed into cartons. Allow a little more storage space than you would for flat-packed boxes of the same quantity. Smaller sizes can sometimes be nested inside larger ones in the same order, which saves room in your stockroom.

How do you print on a round box?

The lid is the face of a round box, because it is what people look down on. A one-colour logo in the centre of the lid in black or white ink is the most common choice and looks clean on brown.

The wall is printed as a band that wraps right round, so any design has a seam where the ends meet. Your designer places that seam at the back, and keeps text away from it. Full colour suits a patterned wrap, while a single line of text in one colour around the base looks quietly smart. If you sell several scents or flavours, keep the lid the same on every box and change only a small word on the band. It saves artwork and keeps the range looking like a set.

Can round kraft boxes be heart or oval shaped?

Yes. One of our photos shows a plain kraft heart box with a matching lid. Hearts are popular for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and wedding favours, and ovals suit soap bars and long balms that would rattle in a circle.

Shaped boxes are made in the same way as round ones, so they also arrive made up. Ask for a shaped box on your quote and the designer will draw the lid print to fit the outline.

How do you order round kraft boxes?

1. Measure the widest point and the full height of your product.
2. Choose round, heart or oval, and a push-on or neck lid.
3. Decide on print for the lid, the wall or both.
4. Send us your logo and any wording for the band.
5. Check the free proof, with the seam position marked.
6. Approve it, and production runs 4–6 business days.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

• Measuring a candle without its lid or the wick that stands above the wax
• Ordering a tight fit, so the jar sticks as it is lifted out
• Placing a logo on the wall where the seam will run through it
• Choosing a shallow lid on a tall box that tips when opened
• Forgetting that round boxes arrive made up and need shelf space

How do you hold a product inside a round box?

A jar that matches the diameter needs nothing else. A smaller product, such as a soap bar in a wide box, can sit on a card disc or in a ring insert that keeps it centred.

Can you post round kraft boxes?

A round box is a display box first. On its own in the post it can roll, dent at the rim or lose its lid. Put it in a small outer carton with paper around it, or tape the lid with a branded sticker.

Many candle makers send two or three round boxes in one mailer, separated by card. If your round box is tall and narrow rather than short and wide, look at our kraft paper tubes, which are made for that shape.
