What do people pack in kraft tuck boxes?
Single retail products that stand upright. Dropper bottles, jars of balm, candle tins, hand soap dispensers, tea caddies and small plant pots all fit the shape.
Our photos show the range: a short carton with dark printed ends, long square cartons with a thumb notch, a tall dispenser box with a line drawing on the front, and a box with a card sleeve that lifts out a potted plant.
The tuck box is the workhorse of retail packaging because it is quick to fill, stacks neatly on a shelf and gives four flat faces for print. Most single products end up in one.
Tuck boxes belong to our kraft retail and gift boxes range.
How does a tuck end close?
Each end has a main flap with a curved tongue and two small dust flaps. Fold the dust flaps in, bring the main flap over and push the tongue down inside the carton.
The tongue sits behind the front or back panel and holds by friction. A slit lock at each shoulder grips it so the end does not spring open on a shelf.
| End style | How it closes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse tuck | Top tucks to the back, bottom tucks to the front | Most retail cartons; the cheapest layout |
| Straight tuck | Both flaps tuck in from the same side | Cartons with a window or print on the front |
| Crash-lock base | Base locks itself as the box opens | Taller or fuller products packed in numbers |
| Tuck top, glued base | Fixed bottom, opening flap on top | Bottles and jars filled from above |
What size tuck box fits my bottle?
Measure the widest point of the product, including the cap, pump or shoulder. Add 1 to 2 mm on width and depth and about 3 mm on height so it slides in without sticking.
Typical starting sizes are about 50 × 50 × 120 mm for a small bottle, 70 × 70 × 150 mm for a jar, 60 × 60 × 250 mm for a tall slim item, and 120 × 80 × 180 mm for a wider pack. These are guidance only; we cut to your numbers.
Our guide on measuring a kraft box inside size shows where the clearance goes.
Which kraft board suits a tuck box?
Tuck cartons are cut from brown kraft folding board. It is a single solid sheet, so it creases cleanly at the folds and gives sharp corners on a shelf.
Long postal cartons, like the square ones in our photos, can be made in brown kraft corrugated for extra protection. For a white inside or truer colours, ask for white-lined kraft.
How does print look on a kraft tuck box?
A tuck box has four side panels and two ends. Most brands put the logo on the front, product details on the back and a short name on the ends so it reads from a shelf.
Black ink line drawings, like the dispenser outline in our photos, work very well on brown. Dark spot colours on the ends give a band of colour without covering the box.
- Front panel: logo and product name
- Back panel: ingredients, directions or a barcode area
- Side panels: a pattern, a size or a scent name
- Top end: a short name for stacked stock

Can a tuck box have a window or a hang hole?
Yes. A front window, die-cut and left open or covered with film, shows the product inside. A hang hole on the top flap lets the box hang on a peg rail.
A thumb notch on the tuck flap, as on the long cartons in our photos, makes the box easier to open. Card inserts can hold a bottle neck or lift a short item.
Can tuck boxes be posted to customers?
A folding board tuck box is made for a shelf, not a sorting office on its own. To post one, pack it inside a mailer or shipping box with a little filler around it.
For long, thin products such as rolled prints or tall bottles, the tuck box can be made in brown kraft corrugated. The long square cartons in our photos are this kind, with a thumb notch at each end for easy opening.
Tell us whether the box will be posted or displayed. We choose the board and the end style to match.
Which tuck box details help in a shop?
Small details decide how a tuck box performs on a shelf. These are the ones customers ask about most.
- A hang hole or hanging tab for peg rails
- A straight tuck so the front panel has no flap edge
- Product name printed on the top end for stacked stock
- A window that shows colour or texture inside
- A seal sticker across the top flap for a tamper sign
How do I fold and fill a tuck box?
- Press the flat carton at the two glued corners so it opens into a tube.
- Fold the bottom dust flaps in, then tuck the bottom flap in.
- Slide the product in from the top.
- Fold the top dust flaps and tuck the top flap behind its panel.
- Add a seal sticker across the top if you want a tamper sign.
Which tuck box mistakes are most common?
Send us a photo of the product beside a ruler and we can spot most of these before the proof.
- Measuring the bottle but not the pump or dropper on top
- Sizing the box so tight that the product sticks on the way in
- Putting small text across a fold line
- Choosing a tuck base for a full jar that is better on a crash-lock base
If your product is round and you want a round pack, compare our kraft paper tubes for retail.

Questions About Kraft Tuck Boxes
Straight answers from the people who cut and print the boxes. Open any question to read the reply.
What is the difference between reverse tuck and straight tuck?
On a reverse tuck box the top and bottom flaps tuck in from opposite sides. On a straight tuck box both tuck in from the same side, which keeps the front panel clean.
Can a kraft tuck box have a hang hole on top?
Yes. A hang hole or a hanging tab on the top flap is an option, so the box can hang on a peg rail in a shop.
Will a kraft tuck box stand up on a shelf?
Yes. The flat base and square folds let it stand on its own. A crash-lock base gives a firmer bottom for fuller products.
Do tuck boxes need glue when I fold them?
No. The side seam is glued when we make them, and the ends close by tucking in. You fold them by hand.
Can I fit a soap dispenser in a tuck box?
Yes. Measure the dispenser with its pump at full height and send the widest point. A tall tuck box around 90 × 70 × 200 mm is a common start.
How tight should a tuck box be around a bottle?
Allow 1 to 2 mm on width and depth and about 3 mm on height. Snug enough not to rattle, loose enough to slide in.
Can a tuck box hold a plant pot?
Yes. A card sleeve inside can lift the pot out, as in our photos. Send the pot size and height of the plant.
Can you make long tuck boxes for posting prints?
Yes. Long square cartons with tuck ends are a flat-sided option for rolled prints, and they stack without rolling.
Is a tuck box strong enough to post on its own?
A folding board tuck box is a retail carton. For posting, place it in a mailer or ask for the carton in brown kraft corrugated.
Can I print barcodes on a kraft tuck box?
Yes. Print barcodes in black on brown board and keep them a good size so scanners can read them. We check this on the proof.
Can a tuck box be printed in white ink?
Yes. White ink on brown kraft gives a soft, light mark that suits simple logos and larger text.
Do you make tuck boxes with a window on the front?
Yes. A front window, open or filmed, is an option on a straight tuck box.
