What are kraft candle boxes?

Kraft candle boxes are brown board cartons sized to one candle or a small set. Shelf cartons fold from kraft folding board and close with tuck flaps, while posting boxes use kraft corrugated with a card ring that grips the jar. They arrive flat and fold up at your bench.

Who buys kraft candle boxes?

Mostly small candle studios. They pour jar candles at home or in a unit, sell at markets and craft fairs, and post orders from their own websites.

Brown board fits the handmade look many of them want. It also hides the small scuffs a box picks up on a market table, and a plain black logo reads cleanly on it.

Our photos show the four shapes we are asked for most: a square tuck carton for a tumbler, a carton with a front window, a corrugated mailer with a jar insert and a long slim pack for tapers.

If you also pour wax melts or make bars and balms, the soap, candle and cosmetic box range keeps the whole shelf in one board and one ink.

How does a kraft candle box close?

The closure depends on where the candle is going. A shop shelf needs a box that opens and closes neatly many times, while a parcel needs one that stays shut in a sorting bag.

  • Tuck end carton: a tongue folds into the top and the base, with small dust flaps inside. This is the square carton in our photos, and it suits most single jars.
  • Crash-lock base: the base folds into place as you open the carton, so packing a run of candles is quicker and the bottom sits flat under a glass jar.
  • Roll-front mailer: the lid rolls over the front panel and its side ears tuck into the walls. Use it when the candle travels in the post on its own.
  • Two-part display: an open carton holds the candle while a second carton sits under it as a plinth, which works well on a market stall.

Whatever the style, the tuck tongue should be long enough to grip. A short tongue on a tall carton springs open when someone lifts the box by its lid.

What size box fits a candle jar?

Put the ruler across the jar where it is widest, lid fitted. Wooden and metal lids are often wider than the glass, and a box cut to the glass alone will not close.

Add about 2 mm on each side for a shelf carton. For a mailer with an insert, the card ring takes the clearance, so the outer box is sized to the ring rather than the jar.

Treat the candle sizes below as a first guess. They are guidance, not stock sizes, and every order is cut to the inside size you give us.

A domed or wooden lid is the tricky part, and measuring the inside of a kraft box shows where the ruler goes.

Folding kraft or corrugated for candles?

For a candle that sits on a shelf, most makers pick brown kraft folding board. It creases sharply, so the corners of a square candle box look crisp, and it takes a fine line of black ink well.

Brown kraft corrugated is for posting. Its fluted middle lets the walls flex a little when a parcel is dropped, and candle glass likes that. The open mailer in our photos is corrugated with a folding board ring inside.

On request we can use white-lined kraft for candles too. It keeps the brown outside but gives a clean white inside when the lid opens, as on the tall carton in our photos.

We never promise a thickness or a strength figure. If you want to compare boards before you choose, read our notes on kraft board types.

How does print look on a brown candle box?

Ink on kraft sits into the board rather than on top of it, so colours look a little darker and softer than on white. Black is the safest single colour and looks sharp even in fine line work.

One of our sample cartons carries a loose flower drawing in thin black lines with the maker's name in plain capitals. Another covers the lid and part of each panel in a dark brown spot ink, leaving bare kraft around a window.

White ink gives a light logo on brown and works best for bold shapes. Full colour is possible, but pale tones fade into the board, so keep them for small details.

You can also print inside the lid, which is a nice spot for burning instructions or a short thank-you line.

Our guide to black, white and colour ink on kraft has examples of each finish on brown board.

Should a candle box have a window?

A window lets a buyer see the wax colour, the dried petals pressed into the side or the number of tapers in a pack. It is the quickest way to sell a candle you cannot smell through the box.

Place the window on the front panel and keep a strip of board of at least 10 mm around it, away from the folds. The carton stays square and the edge of the opening does not tear.

A candle window may stay open or get a clear film backing. On our taper pack, three shaped windows run along the front so each candle shows through its own opening.

For more window shapes and positions, see the full range of kraft boxes with a die-cut window.

How do you post a jar candle safely?

Glass jars move in transit, and a jar that slides into a corner can crack its rim or chip the lid. The fix is to stop the movement, not to add more filling.

  1. Choose a corrugated mailer a little larger than the jar on every side.
  2. Add a folding board insert with a round cut-out that grips the jar just below the lid.
  3. Leave air between the candle lid and the mailer lid, so a bump from above lands on board, not glass.
  4. For a gift set, ask for a divider that gives the jar and a box of matches separate bays.
  5. Close the mailer, run your thumb along the tucked ears and add your label to the lid.

Inserts like these are drawn for each job, and the kraft mailer boxes with inserts page shows more layouts for jars and sets.

Can you box tealights, pillars and tapers?

Yes. Tealights sit in a shallow carton in one or two rows, and a simple card tray stops them rolling when the box is tipped.

Tapers need a long, narrow pack. Ours tucks at both ends and shows the candles through the front, which works for sets of six or twelve hung on a peg or laid flat.

Pillar candles without a jar can go in a square tuck carton cut close to their width, so the wax does not scuff on the walls.

Short pillars and travel tins also suit round kraft boxes with a lid if you want a softer shape on the shelf.

Which mistakes should you avoid with candle packaging?

  • Measuring the glass but not the lid, so the carton will not close.
  • Placing a window across a fold line, which weakens the corner.
  • Choosing pale or pastel ink as the main colour on brown board.
  • Sending a shelf carton through the post with no insert around the jar.
  • Forgetting space on a side panel for the warning label most candle sellers add.
  • Ordering boxes before the jar supplier has confirmed the final jar size.

A free design proof catches most of these before anything is printed, so check the sizes on it against a real jar.

Your question is not here?Ask on WhatsApp+44 7578 382054
Can a kraft candle box fit a jar with a wooden lid?

Yes. Measure the lid as well as the glass, because wooden lids are often wider and taller than they look. We size the box to the widest point you give us.

Do kraft candle boxes come with an insert for the jar?

Inserts are an option. A card ring holds the jar steady inside a mailer, and a divider can give a jar and matches their own bays.

Can I put the candle warning label on the box itself?

Yes. Many makers print their safety and burning text on a side or base panel in small black type, which stays readable on brown kraft.

Which kraft candle box works for a three-wick candle?

A wide square tuck carton or a corrugated mailer with a ring insert. Three-wick jars are broad and low, so give us the diameter with the lid on.

Can the box for a taper set have windows?

Yes. A long tuck pack with one or more die-cut windows along the front lets buyers count the tapers without opening it.

Will a candle box with a window let dust in?

An open window can, so for shelf stock that sits for weeks ask for clear film behind the window.

Can I order one candle box design in two jar sizes?

Yes. We quote each size on the same request and your designers adapt the artwork to both dielines.

Do you make candle gift boxes for a jar and matches?

Yes. A mailer with a divider gives the jar one bay and a matchbox or wick trimmer another, similar to the white set in our photos.

Is a kraft candle carton strong enough to post on its own?

A folding board carton is made for shelves and gift bags. For the post, choose a corrugated mailer with an insert around the jar.

Can the inside of a candle box be white?

Yes, white-lined kraft is available on request. The outside stays brown and the inside opens up white.

Can I get candle boxes plain with no print?

Yes. Plain kraft cartons are a common choice for makers who add their own stamp or sticker to each box.

How do I know the candle box size is right before production?

Your free proof shows the inside measurements on the dieline. Check them against a real filled jar, lid on, before you approve.
